The fibroblast is the basic cell of the connective tissue. The main function of fibroblasts is to maintain the structural integrity of connective tissue by producing connective fibers in the form of collagen and elastin into the extracellular matrix. As they have a considerable regenerative capacity, they fill tissue defects. Fibroblasts play an important role in wound healing.
