Photoepilation involves targeted damage to the hair follicles by absorbing the light of the treatment flash in the hair pigment melanin.

The hair is released from the follicle and loses the ability to form hair later. On average, epilation should be repeated at recommended, usually 3-week intervals. This applies to any laser or intense pulsed light used for epilation.

This is due to the progression of the hair growth stages. The number of epilations is directly dependent on the number of hairs in the growth phase (anagen), when the hair is sensitive to epilation (i.e. it depends on the characteristics of the organism and not on the epilating device).
